Chapter Thirty-Seven
Ray got through the night thinking of Sarah. He fed from a blonde girl who reminded him of her. Heâd let himself pretend she was the girl he loved, rather than what she really was; a junkie looking for a fix. The thought of drinking from Sarah turned him on, but he knew that was fucked up. She wouldnât want him like this. He wasnât done changing himself for her yet. The girl moaned as he retracted his fangs from her throat. His last client for the night got up and staggered to the door. He let her leave knowing he had it in him to make her stay. Heâd used a small amount of his persuasive power to test the waters on a few of his clients. Heâd asked one of the regulars to wear something specific the next time she came and sheâd done it. Heâd told one of them he was going to take more blood and sheâd let him. Little things, but he knew he could get them to help him, he just didnât have a fully developed plan yet.
Liv seemed to visit at random, but heâd been sure to check her thoughts every time she fed him to re-enforce their bond. Her visits werenât as random as they seemed. She always came when she was feeling low. Pushing him and the others around made her feel better. He thought of those others. He didnât know how many vampires sheâd made, but he wasnât alone. He wondered how he could use that against her.
He lay down. The phone by the bed rang. Heâd already tried to use it to call out, but it was an internal system. It wasnât as if he had someone he could call to fix this mess for him anyway. The last thing he wanted to do was to give Sarah any more pain in her life. He knew how she felt about Ben and everything that had happened with the guy. She felt so guilty over it all. He couldnât put her through that again. There was no way he could do that to her. He picked up the handset only after it rang four times.
The receptionist sounded uncertain. âSomeoneâs requesting you by name.â
âA regular?â
âNo.â
âWhat does she look like?â
âItâs a guy.â
He frowned. âGot a name?â
âHe put a fake name on the form.â
He wasnât sure what to make of it. âWhat does he say he wants?â
âJust bitten,â she said. âIs that okay? I donât know if I should callâ¦â
âDonât call her. Sheâs busy tonight.â He had no idea if she was, but he wanted to deal with this himself, whatever it was.
âSo itâs okay to send him down?â
He hesitated for a second, but he had nothing to lose. âSend him down.â He hung up and got to his feet. A guy who knew he was here? He tried to think. It could be a trick, some kind of test set up by Liv. He sighed. That had to be what it was.
