Chapter Thirty-Seven

Ray got through the night thinking of Sarah. He fed from a blonde girl who reminded him of her. He’d let himself pretend she was the girl he loved, rather than what she really was; a junkie looking for a fix. The thought of drinking from Sarah turned him on, but he knew that was fucked up. She wouldn’t want him like this. He wasn’t done changing himself for her yet. The girl moaned as he retracted his fangs from her throat. His last client for the night got up and staggered to the door. He let her leave knowing he had it in him to make her stay. He’d used a small amount of his persuasive power to test the waters on a few of his clients. He’d asked one of the regulars to wear something specific the next time she came and she’d done it. He’d told one of them he was going to take more blood and she’d let him. Little things, but he knew he could get them to help him, he just didn’t have a fully developed plan yet.

Liv seemed to visit at random, but he’d been sure to check her thoughts every time she fed him to re-enforce their bond. Her visits weren’t as random as they seemed. She always came when she was feeling low. Pushing him and the others around made her feel better. He thought of those others. He didn’t know how many vampires she’d made, but he wasn’t alone. He wondered how he could use that against her.

He lay down. The phone by the bed rang. He’d already tried to use it to call out, but it was an internal system. It wasn’t as if he had someone he could call to fix this mess for him anyway. The last thing he wanted to do was to give Sarah any more pain in her life. He knew how she felt about Ben and everything that had happened with the guy. She felt so guilty over it all. He couldn’t put her through that again. There was no way he could do that to her. He picked up the handset only after it rang four times.

The receptionist sounded uncertain. “Someone’s requesting you by name.”

“A regular?”

“No.”

“What does she look like?”

“It’s a guy.”

He frowned. “Got a name?”

“He put a fake name on the form.”

He wasn’t sure what to make of it. “What does he say he wants?”

“Just bitten,” she said. “Is that okay? I don’t know if I should call…”

“Don’t call her. She’s busy tonight.” He had no idea if she was, but he wanted to deal with this himself, whatever it was.

“So it’s okay to send him down?”

He hesitated for a second, but he had nothing to lose. “Send him down.” He hung up and got to his feet. A guy who knew he was here? He tried to think. It could be a trick, some kind of test set up by Liv. He sighed. That had to be what it was.
